Same court. Same rules. Different strategy?

Tracie welcomes coach Mindy Yoder back to tackle a question that comes up all the time in recreational pickleball: should you actually play differently in mixed doubles than you do in gender doubles?

Mindy says yes, although some of the most important rules of good partnership never change.

Communication comes first. Who covers the middle? Who gets the lobs? What is each player’s strongest shot? Those conversations matter whether you’re playing with a man, a woman or a complete stranger you’ve just met five minutes before a tournament.

But mixed doubles does bring a different dynamic. Mindy says women often see 70–80% of the balls, which means part of the strategy is figuring out how to get the male partner more involved rather than letting opponents keep one player out of the point.

In this episode, you’ll hear:

  • Why women tend to get targeted in mixed doubles

  • How hitting through the middle can help bring a partner into the point

  • Why wide angles can actually shrink a partner’s court coverage

  • When stacking can make sense in mixed doubles

  • Why women may need to give themselves permission to play more aggressively

  • Why one quick conversation before rec play can prevent a whole lot of irritation

And perhaps most importantly, Mindy makes the case that sometimes the smartest pickleball strategy has nothing to do with technique.

The big takeaway:

Know what kind of game everyone came to play.

Competitive? Social? Somewhere in between? Read the room, communicate with your partner and remember that the goal isn’t simply to win every point.

As Mindy puts it: “It’s better to be a good human than to win the point.”
